Al Qasim Green University

UPA won the competition to design the new Green Campus University in Babil, Iraq, conceived as a sustainable academic hub based on LEED criteria. The campus includes five colleges—agriculture, veterinary sciences, biotechnology, food production, and environmental studies—alongside the presidency building, sports and cultural facilities, a central library, and housing for students and staff. The presidency building is the first LEED-registered project in Iraq, with a target of LEED Gold certification.

The masterplan is organized like an ancient town, with a central square and an elliptical infrastructure ring defining the academic core across multiple levels, ensuring connectivity and shaded pedestrian paths. Architecture references local heritage through brick façades inspired by Babylonian construction and modernist concrete elements. The design preserves the existing terrain and integrates renewable energy, electric mobility, and resource-efficient strategies to achieve high environmental performance.

“Architectures are the theaters in which our lives unfold: when these theaters are beautiful and work well, the performances we witness become better and more enjoyable.”
